ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Stick to what you know

Founded in 1949 by three friends and entrepreneurs, Automatic Data Processing (ADP) was one of the first companies to offer outside payroll processing services, a trend that later became known as "outsourcing." ADP went public in 1961 and has expanded and diversified over the years through a number of acquisitions.

ADP SURVEY SAYS

War stories

ADP is not for slackers. Says one insider, "At ADP, you work hard or you're gone," not necessarily because people are fired, but because "the sheer volume and high expectations will drive slackers out the door." Another contact observes, "If you don't like being held accountable for the speed and quality of your work, look elsewhere. If you are a hard worker and willing to prove it, ADP is a great place to work." An especially high volume time for the company is the holiday season. Sources advise, "Don't expect any free time in December or January," adding that "year end 'war stories' like 'I was on the phone with X client at 11 p.m. last night!' are not unusual." On the flip side, "if you can do the work, your career opportunities are unlimited" and "training is excellent and widely available at all levels."
