ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Getting some sun

Who doesn't think about retiring to Florida? Well, it might not be retirement, exactly, but Arnstein & Lehr has been moving forces into the Sunshine State, although Chicago has been its home base since 1893. In 1981, the firm opened its first Florida office in West Palm Beach. Since then, it has added four more Southeastern outposts, the most recent of which, in Fort Lauderdale, was launched in January 2006. The newest office is staffed with 11 laterals lured from local firms, including a six-member securities transaction team from Adorno & Yoss, the largest minority-owned law firm in the country.

Tips from the inside

Selective summer

Arnstein & Lehr's summer program is small -- in the summer of 2005, just four 2Ls graced the halls of the firm's Chicago office. Of these, three were extended an offer. Law students interested in trying out more than one firm should know that Arnstein does not allow split summers. To qualify for a position here, students at "first-tier schools" must be in the top half of their class, while students from lower-tier schools must break the top quarter. The firm recruits at more than a dozen law schools across the Midwest. In addition, as part of its efforts to ensure that new hires don't exclude under-represented groups, the firm interviews at Howard University and participates in the Cook County Bar Association Minority Job Fair.
