ABOUT THIS COMPANY:
Neutral and nurturingWhether white-clad “angels” tending to wounded soldiers in World War I or hardhat workers helping to evacuate families imperiled by California’s wildfires, Red Cross workers have been internationally recognized icons of relief for more than 100 years. Founded in Washington, D.C., in1881 by Clara Barton, the American Red Cross (ARC) conducts relief projects that reach every corner of the globe. In fact, the ARC’s first international action dates to 1892 when the ARC provided food and medicine to those affected by famine in Russia. Its Washington, D.C., headquarters allows it to work closely with federal agencies such as FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) in times of crisis. The organization is best known in the United States for aiding survivors of natural disasters. These can be large-scale, like the 2005 hurricanes that battered New Orleans, Florida and the Gulf coastline, and the December 2004 tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia, for which the organization secured more than $400 million in a mere two weeks.
