ABOUT THIS COMPANY:
It all started with a car…In 1927, in Madison, Wis., insurance salesman Herman Wittwer planted the seed of what eventually grew into American Family Insurance Group (AFIG), supporting the firm's tentative early beginnings with farmers' premiums as the Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance Company. After subsequently adding a host of other services, including sickness, accident, farm owners' and homeowners' insurance, the company changed its name to American Family Mutual Insurance Company in 1963.
