ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Pretty big, huh!

ABB is a giant in the world of power and automation technologies, the two businesses at the core of the company’s existence which are further subdivided into smaller business units.  ABB’s approximately 120,000 staff develops technologies that help its customers increase their performance while decreasing their energy use and environmental impact.  Its products and systems offerings pull in the majority of the company’s earnings.  On the more interesting automation side, most of its revenue contribution is drawn from automation products and processes.  Furthermore, ABB has a third offering— robots!  Establishing leadership in the robotics industry, the company has gained revenue of more than $1.2 billion from its robotics division alone.  It has produced 150,000 robots that do jobs humans won’t, can’t, or cost more to perform like assembling, painting and finishing all types of products.  Additionally, ABB has developed the software that runs them and has bolted them to the floor.

SURVEY SAYS

Varying views across the world

Unsurprisingly, for a firm with a global reach, insiders are split on their opinions of the firm.  While the general consensus among European-based workers appears to be that there are “limited opportunities for advancement,” one Swiss insider tells us that it is possible, but “you have to say what it is you want to go for.”  So speak up.  The shy child gets no cake, after all.  However, one particular insider vents out very strong feelings about the poor quality of ABB management, saying, “When ABB gets rid of the low-esteem bullies of bosses who de-motivate and intimidate their employees, and gets socially responsible people that have high esteem and regards for others in terms of their dignity, perhaps this would be a happier workplace.”

Tips from the inside

Check out those ABBs

ABB is looking for people characterized by “competence, ambition and integrity.”  There are two main career paths that you can jump into if you want to work at ABB: research and development (R&D) and technical consulting.  The company also sponsors five global trainee programs for corporate development, human resources and sustainability, marketing and sales, finance and business control, and information systems.  ABB is looking for applicants who are recent university graduates, ideally candidates with a master’s degree.  For prospective but nonrecent graduate applicants, they can search available positions in three separate databases: professional, research and internships.  Job categories include communications, corporate strategy, design and engineering, and finance/accounting, among others.
