Verizon Wireless is now the top mobile service provider in the U.S., thanks to a merger with Alltel that wrapped in early 2009. But it has always commanded plenty of respect, running close behind rival AT&T Mobility (and formerly, its Cingular subsidiary). That history has been forged by through a number of significant industry milestones. This subsidiary of Verizon Communications constructed the first wide-area wireless broadband network in the U.S., the first consumer 3G multimedia service and the music download service with the biggest catalog for mobile devices (with subscribers downloading more than 50 million songs and videos every three months).
