ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Selling assets to Scotland

In December 2008, Credit Suisse agreed to sell a part of its asset management unit to Aberdeen Asset Management for a $360 million stake (about 25 percent) in the British company and a seat on its board. As part of the deal, Credit Suisse will transfer about $71 billion in its managed assets to Aberdeen, the largest independent investment management firm in Scotland. The deal included portions of Credit Suisse asset management divisions in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Credit Suisse SURVEY SAYS

Nobody's perfect

The work atmosphere could use a little improvement, say insiders, but it's not as bad as it used to be. Not long ago, Credit Suisse went through some internal turmoil, as poor market conditions caused several rounds of layoffs, which in turn lowered morale. Today, though, it looks like the firm has put those days to rest. Credit Suisse has an "excellent environment," says a source, "but it does depend upon which group you're in." "The level of communication and openness in this organization is refreshing compared to my former firm," says another, who used to work for a Credit Suisse competitor. "They seem to have gotten past almost all of these issues with the DLJ acquisition and certainly those with the First Boston acquisition," though one contact says that there should be encouragement of "more sharing of best practices amongst relationship managers in the private client group."

Tips from the inside

Shoot for the stars

If you're trying to get your hands on a position in Credit Suisse, it may all depend on where exactly you're shooting for, department-wise. It "seems easy to get a job in the private client group," says one source, conceding that it "may be harder to get a job in investment banking or other areas."
