Shorter and stronger

For most of its life, Friedman LLP operated under a much longer moniker: Friedman Alpren & Green LLP.  The firm was founded in 1924 as A. Albert Greenspan & Co., becoming Friedman Alpren & Green in 1948.  A series of mergers marked its development in modern times, starting in 1997 with the acquisition of Putterman, Rush & Shapiro LLP.  This added nearly 45 people to Friedman Alpren’s employee roster and boosted annual revenue by about $3 million.  In 2003, the firm grew again, merging with Long Island’s Deutsch, Marin & Company and gaining 16 new faces plus $3.5 million more in revenue.

The merger that redefined Friedman Alpren & Green came in 2004, when it entered into an agreement with New Jersey-based Ehrenkrantz Sterling & Company, a deal which added 44 new employees.  That was when the firm’s partners decided it was time for a name change, lopping off Alpren and Green to become simply Friedman LLP.  Friedman Alpren Managing Partner Bruce Madnick stayed on at the helm, while Ehrenkrantz Sterling Managing Partner Jeffrey Zudeck agreed to become a partner in the new Friedman LLP.  According to Madnick, the Ehrenkrantz deal came about because both companies were members of the DFK International network of independent accounting firms, so they were able to get the merger started on a handshake.
