In more literal terms: "Since many of its current contracts are long-term, any reduction in government funding won't be seen for years and the business will be insulated from an economic downturn." With this status as a defense powerhouse seemingly assured, Lockheed insiders report a number of downright nurturing company initiatives. "All new hires are strongly encouraged to choose a mentor and develop a career plan," says an engineer. "In most cases, your manager will hold a bi-yearly meeting with you to discuss and help develop [this] plan." Another contact says "there is a great deal of focus placed on & career development."
