SRA founder Ernst Volgenau began his career in the military.  An Air Force lieutenant, he spent the 1960s and 1970s working as an analyst in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, performing weapons system and command structure analyses.  Later, after gaining experience with computer program management and database development, Volgenau was named director of data automation for the Air Force Logistics Command.  After retiring from the military in 1976, Volgenau decided he had more work to do: He founded Systems Research and Applications Corporation in 1978, and operated the company from his basement.  Within a month, Volgenau had hired his first employee.

Systems Research and Applications Corporation was reincorporated as SRA International in 1984, and its initial public offering in 2002 brought in $90 million.  Today, Volgenau serves as board chairman, while president and CEO Stanton “Stan” Sloane oversees daily operations.  Students at George Mason University’s School of Information Technology and Engineering know Volgenau as the man whose name is on their building; in 2005 the IT school was renamed the Volgenau School of IT&E, in recognition of a $10 million donation from Volgenau and his wife Sara, the largest individual contribution in George Mason’s history.
