Morrison & Foerster LLP Perspective

The ever-expanding world of MoFo

Over a century since its 1883 founding, Morrison & Foerster has expanded to 15 different cities. In the 1990s, the firm greatly increased its Asian presence, opening branches in Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, Brussels, and one of the largest American law offices in Tokyo. Within the U.S., MoFo has a number of well-regarded practices and several very prominent attorneys. Partners James Brosnahan and Melvin Goldman are former presidents of the Bar Association of San Francisco, and Robert D. Raven served as president of the American Bar Association from 1988-89. In May 1999, the securities litigation group picked up David Bayless, head of the San Francisco office of the SEC.

Tips from the inside

“We are looking for a good mix of well-rounded individuals,” says a senior associate.  “It is nearly impossible to go straight from undergraduate school to law school to our firm without some other life experience to add.  We love to hire judicial clerks.  We also want some business experience.”  In terms of personality, MoFo is looking for someone who is “personable, smart [and] capable” and “can get the work done.”  If you’re fortunate enough to land an interview, expect “a 30-minute screening interview” and a callback “consisting of five or six 30-minute interviews and a meal with two attorneys,” according to a Los Angeles insider.  Given the current economic reality, a litigator advises, “It is more important than ever before to impress EVERY interviewer at the firm.  I think before, you could get away with one or two subpar interviews; not so anymore.”

Should I go to Law School?
My time working at a law firm really hasn't convinced me that most of what lawyers do, especially at the more junior levels, really requires much intellectual creativity at all. So, the first part of my question is: how fair do you think this assessment is?This first question is really a subsidiary to the larger question I'm mulling over: should I go to law school?
