Tips from the inside

“Smart is a given,” says a Dallas associate. “After that, the firm is looking for people who pass the airport lounge test.” However, a senior associate disagrees, “Academic credentials and law school pedigree are increasingly important, with personality less important than in the past.” Better to be safe and bring both to the interview, along with some stellar writing skills. “We reject people on the basis of writing samples, and if you get no-offered after a summer, it's generally because you can't write,” reports a DC associate. (The firm notes that a range of factors are considered, not only writing ability.) And don’t forget that showing a little regional interest is always a plus: “Selection is competitive. Candidates must express a strong interest in the firm, the city, and the type of work,” according to a Houston contact.

Should I go to Law School?
My time working at a law firm really hasn't convinced me that most of what lawyers do, especially at the more junior levels, really requires much intellectual creativity at all. So, the first part of my question is: how fair do you think this assessment is?This first question is really a subsidiary to the larger question I'm mulling over: should I go to law school?
