Founded at the behest of then-governor of Virginia Thomas Jefferson, the William & Mary School of Law is one of the oldest law schools. Today, W&M Law is particularly strong in constitutional law (a program run by its Institute of Bill of Rights Law), as well as a recently established program on election law. The school also focuses on the up-and-coming field of national security law through its human rights and national security law program.

The hallmark of W&M Law's JD curriculum is its two-year legal skills program, which begins in the first year with an intensive weeklong orientation. The program splits students into small groups for courses focusing on professionalism and ethics, adding a practical element to the theory-based core classes. As for dual degree options, W&M Law offers a JD/MBA, JD/MPP, and JD/MA in American studies.

W&M Law graduates gravitate towards private practice on the East Coast, but the school's reputation carries weight with Southeastern and New England employers as well. Locally, Williamsburg is a quiet town, so most social activities are based on campus. Students say like the community, but note that those seeking a big party school should look elsewhere.
