Business education began at the University of Pittsburgh in 1907 with its evening program in economics, accounts and finance, though the Katz Graduate School of Business wasn't actually established until almost 50 years later. Katz is known for its one-year MBA program, which was the first of its kind offered in the U.S. Today, the school also offers its MBA in the traditional two, year format, as well as through part-time and executive programs.

Katz's MBA program is based around a set of core courses concentrated in the first year, with flexible distribution requirements in the first and third terms. The second year of the program (or the second half of the one-year program) is dedicated to electives, which students can use to concentrate in seven areas, including finance and human resources management.

After graduation, Katz MBAs pursue careers around Pennsylvania and the wider Mid-Atlantic region, concentrated in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. The school hosts networking events as well as offers a variety of student organizations, but, as with most urban campuses, social activities are focuses off campus in Pittsburgh's bars, restaurants and cultural venues. And getting around the city is particularly easy because public transportation in Pittsburgh is free for UPitt students.
