• “I spend a lot of time writing memos and I would prefer to be writing pleadings.  Of course, I understand that this is the life of a first-year.  I'm sure I have better work than my fellow first-years at other firms.” –junior associate

Proskauer Rose LLP Perspective

THE SCOOP

Swish! And goal! And other sports metaphors! Proskauer Rose LLP is practically synonymous with "sports law." (Clients include Major League Baseball, the NFL, the NHL and the NBA.) However, this reputation shortchanges the rest of the firms incredibly diversified practice, which features topnotch corporate, litigation, labor and employment, real estate, tax, health care and entertainment practices.

Excellence personified

Founded in 1875 in New York City, Proskauer Rose has grown to be one of the nation's largest law firms, providing a broad field of legal services to clients throughout the United States and the world. We now number seven domestic and three international offices, and practice in all areas important to business, including corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, real estate transactions, bankruptcy and reorganizations, taxation, litigation, intellectual property, and labor and employment law. Our clients represent some of the most influential players in industries ranging from financial services to information technology, pharmaceuticals to transportation. In all our high stakes matters, for all our disparate clients, we uphold a standard of excellence, innovation and unwavering dedication to our clients interests. And it's our lawyers- graduates of the nation's best law schools, active in civic, philanthropic and trade organizations, and holding leadership positions in government agencies, the judiciary, charities and corporate boards- who personify that ethos of excellence.

Getting Hired

Tips from the inside

“Given the state of the economy, our hiring process is now extremely competitive,” says one associate.  “We are looking for bright, motivated candidates with strong interpersonal skills.”  Another source agrees, “Proskauer looks to hire people who easily mesh on an interpersonal level with the attorneys already here. We work a lot of hours and a high premium is placed on personality.”  If you’re looking for a spot in a specific office, make sure to “do your homework.”  A Boston contact advises, “We are not a ‘full service’ shop – we have three or four sophisticated specialized practice areas, so someone who comes in looking to be a ‘generalist’ is not likely to get an offer.”  In Chicago, the office is “very competitive.”  Says an associate, “You must be from a [top]-25 school and have a 3.5 GPA or above.”

Should I go to Law School?
My time working at a law firm really hasn't convinced me that most of what lawyers do, especially at the more junior levels, really requires much intellectual creativity at all. So, the first part of my question is: how fair do you think this assessment is?This first question is really a subsidiary to the larger question I'm mulling over: should I go to law school?
