SURVEY SAYS

Not going anywhere -- in a good way

"Lockheed is a huge defense company," says an engineering contact in Virginia, "it's not going anywhere." In more literal terms: "Since many of its current contracts are long-term, any reduction in government funding won't be seen for years and the business will be insulated from an economic downturn." With this status as a defense powerhouse seemingly assured, Lockheed insiders report a number of downright nurturing company initiatives. "All new hires are strongly encouraged to choose a mentor and develop a career plan," says an engineer. "In most cases, your manager will hold a bi-yearly meeting with you to discuss and help develop [this] plan." Another contact says "there is a great deal of focus placed on & career development."

Tips from the inside

The key to Lockheed

Lockheed's web site features a careers page, (www.lockheedmartinjobs.com) with a packed calendar of recruiting events for college students and a wealth of information on career paths at the firm. Georgia Tech, UCLA, Texas A&M, Cornell and Virginia Tech are a few of the schools where the firm holds on-campus recruiting. Representatives from Lockheed also host a "career module" event at several Universities -- called "I'm hired, now what? Real Job 101" -- to prep campus hires for jumping into the working world. The firm says it looks for students with GPAs of 2.8 or higher in majors like engineering, finance, physics and math.
