SURVEY SAYS

Associate Life
Vault’s Verdict: Great work and pleasant co-workers makes for satisfied associates at Bingham McCutchen.

Satisfaction:

• “The lawyers and staff are generally a very nice bunch. Personality is an important part of hiring. I don't perceive lawyers socializing together outside of work, but during work everyone gets along. The atmosphere is middling-professional -- some people are too casual. Politically, while there certainly are conservatives and moderates, they are not prominent, and the firm's management constantly trumpets the firm's liberal bona fides.”  –DC associate
• “Love it -- I couldn't ask for any better. Social, non-hierarchical, liberal -- awesome.” –San Francisco associate
• “I have been pleasantly surprised by the variety of work I have been able to do including drafting motions, meeting with clients and researching legal issues. As a first year, I did not expect this level of work.”  –Los Angeles associate

Tips from the inside

“We have a great reputation and there are not many spots, so the Hiring Committee is really tough on applicants,” warns a Santa Monica associate. So what qualities should potential associates be sure to bring to the table? According to a New York contact, “The firm is looking for a candidate who is competent and passionate about her work, but also realizes the value of having a life and interests outside the office.” Another source adds that candidates should be “smart and outgoing, but able to socialize.” In Boston, a high level of maturity is a must: “I think, more than other firms, Bingham looks to hire people who are responsible. There are very few hard-partying attorneys here,” says one associate. “Even many of the young associates are married, and many have families.”

Should I go to Law School?
My time working at a law firm really hasn't convinced me that most of what lawyers do, especially at the more junior levels, really requires much intellectual creativity at all. So, the first part of my question is: how fair do you think this assessment is?This first question is really a subsidiary to the larger question I'm mulling over: should I go to law school?
