Tips from the inside

Though virtually all top law firms value high grades and a good law school pedigree, “personality is much more important” at Kramer, according to a litigator. A junior associate says that the strongest candidates are “Intelligent, well-rounded, friendly individuals who also have lives apart from work.” A New Yorker warns, “If you have great grades but aren't affable, you should look elsewhere.” In terms of the hiring process, after an on campus interview, expect to meet with up to “four lawyers in the practice group that you are interested in, usually including partners” as well as lunch with several associates. While at an interview, be sure to display some knowledge about the firm itself and be “easy-going” and “personable.”
