Build it and they will come
A division of SunGard Financial Systems—which is itself a subsidiary of SunGard Data Systems—SunGard Consulting Services has two main areas of specialization: energy and financial services. In addition to helping clients attain compliance in those fields, one of SunGard’s particular specialties is in developing custom applications and software for clients. The majority of the consulting arm’s work is tied in with SunGard’s broader work in the financial and energy fields: The firm is a global leader in software and processing solutions in both of those sectors. In fact, the first key to understanding the depth of the consulting arm’s focus is to understand how that arm is positioned within the firm at large.
SunGard traces its roots back to 1982, when it was formed in a leveraged buyout from Sun Oil Company. Having gone public four years later, it was taken private again in 2006, again in a leveraged buyout—a deal worth an estimated $11.5 billion. At the time it was taken private, the company was worth in excess of $4.3 billion per year in revenue, a figure that rose to almost $5.6 billion in 2008. The company that exists today is comprised of four businesses: availability services, financial systems, higher education and public sector. Each of them provides IT and infrastructure services, as well as software and processing solutions. The firm’s services, meanwhile, can be broken down into three main areas: availability services, consulting services and technology services.
