Opel Labor Rep: Won't Submit To "Blackmail" After GM Decision
FRANKFURT -(Dow Jones)- The workers council of Adam Opel GmbH voiced its anger Wednesday at parent company General Motors Co.'s decision to keep Opel as part of the group despite months of negotiations aimed at selling a stake to an investor.
"GM's next step will be to blackmail governments and workers in Europe to finance GM's unsustainable plan (for Opel)," labor chief Klaus Franz said in a statement. "Labor representatives won't submit to this and will seek solidarity with governments," he said.
Following months of negotiations, GM reneged on a tentative plan to sell a stake in Opel to a consortium led by Magna International Inc. (MGA).
Opel's Franz said the workers council won't work to support an integration back into parent company GM, but will stick to its role of protecting workers' rights, including demanding payments from its wage agreements with GM.
