Birmingham is an excellent city to live. Some visitors have indicated
that this is a "northern university in a southern town". The student
is provided a stipend (currently 21,000) for living expenses. This is
usually enough to buy their own apartments or houses and have a very
active social life. Although not as big as New York or San Francisco,
Birmingham has a wide array of entertainment and dinning options; from
the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and the Birmingham Broadway Series to
excellent Thai and Southern cooking. For those interested in hiking or
mountain biking this is the perfect town. The Oak Mountain State Park
is about 15 minutes from downtown and has multiple trails and lakes.
This park is used by the US mountain bike Olympic Team during practice
season.
