It is very easy to become involved in student life within the program.
There is a graduate student organization for just about every type of
interest. The golf club and wine club are a lot of fun and the groups
have done a nice job of putting on some great events. There are also
the more serious clubs, such as the Graduate Finance Association, which
have brought in amazing speakers and really facilitate your job search
and industry focus. Also, the Graduate Business Council sponsors an
MBA tailgate for all home games, which are co-sponsored by such
companies as Miller Lite and Microsoft. Football season is a whole new
experience if you did not attend a school with a strong athletic
program for your undergraduate degree. You can also see live music
shows any day of the week, and you better like Tex-Mex (and margaritas
if you drink alcohol) if you're moving to Austin. There are lots of
great restaurants in the city, and it is rare that we eat somewhere
which is not locally owned. Chain restaurants are much more prevalent
in the suburbs, but not in the main part of town near campus other than
the typical fast food places located near any college campus. The club
and bar scene are both very active due to the very large undergraduate
program at UT. There are also a number of places where the
undergraduate students do not go and where an "older crowd" can be
found, such as 4th Street and the Stephen F. Austin Hotel. The famous
Sixth street is a mad house on the weekend with lots of great bars and
music, although the music scene is spread throughout the city. You
will have an amazing time at Halloween and during the Austin City
Limits Music Festival, along with any other weekend you choose to get
out in Austin!
