With an undergrad population of around 50,000 plus the great weather, lakes, rivers, green hills and valleys - you can't beat it. THere is barely any crime that I can perceive other than typical college campus issues. Housing is not cheap - the nicer places are as pricey as some East Coast venues - but the campus and local amenities make it all worthwhile. The campus at Texas is gorgeous and unique to the Southwest, and the school spirit is typical of a mega school with top notch academics and sports programs. Some of my friends leave their doors and cars unlocked year round. I didn't have a car in Austin yet was able to get around cheaply with cabs and such.
