Quality of Life Survey |

Austin is a great city in which to live - and play! The quality of
life here is excellent, especially if you enjoy outdoor activities.
There are numerous running, biking and hiking clubs. This is also a
great family town with many activities for kids as well as events such
as 5K runs on the weekends. As a female I feel completely safe here.
The intramural groups are very popular within the graduate program, and
the city provides parks, trails and has the river for kayaking and
rowing. There is also a large lake very close to the city, which is
great for weekend getaways. You really can't beat the weather during
the fall-spring, however, it gets really hot in July and August, and if
you'll miss the snow this is not the place for you. The shopping is
focused on small boutique type businesses rather than the malls, and
you won't find a Wal-Mart within the city limits. Austin is a VERY
liberal city, especially considering it is in the heart of Texas.
Housing prices are just a little less than in Dallas for an apartment
(about $1 + per square foot), however, there are lots of houses and
smaller, less commercial apartments which are very reasonable and have
a lot of character. You just have to spend a little more time
looking. I live in an amazing 3-bdrm, 2,400 SF house w/two other
people right near Barton Springs and the park, and we pay $2,000 per
month. The campus facilites are really nice your first year, because
the majority of your classes are in the renovated cohort rooms. There
is also a new lounge only for the MBA students with private group study
rooms, which has added a lot to the quality of the study spaces
available. However, be warned - during your second year most of your
classes are in the building across the street from the main McCombs
building, which has a drab, 1960-ish poorly lit atmosphere. The
technology in the rooms is up-to-date, but everything else is
pathetic.
