Employment Prospects Survey |
| Full time MBA |
Job prospects this year are definitely better than last year. Austin relies to a
large extent on Dallas and Houston for job placements and the last 2-3 years have
been particularly bad for the energy and the financial services industry. Both
these cities seem to have recovered somewhat and if you are looking to look at
Dallas/Houston/Austin, McCombs has no rival. There is also a significant focus of
the school towards entrepreneurship and Austin still has a large base of start
ups that provide you with networking and work opportunities. The career office
has strong recruiting ties and a significant alumni base in companies (big and
small) around here and that definitely helps in such a tight recruiting season.
Some of the big names that consistently hire MBAs here are Dell, Intel,
ExxonMobil, Microsoft, ChevronTexaco, A T Kearney, Frito-Lays, Pepsico, Kraft
Foods etc. Employers that I have talked to rate McCombs MBAs as balanced, reality
focused and executioners. Most of the companies continues hiring through the
worst of the economic cycles.
The MBA career office is well organized, has people with good industry contacts
and previous recruiting experience. I have benefited immensely through extensive
mock interviews, coaching sessions and career counselling. In addition, many
students also identify career opportunities through the UT wide career system.
A word of caution for international students though - the recruiting scene for
international students is specially tough now and you may perhaps want to do more
research before you decide to sink in $100k for your MBA.
