The USC campus is beautiful. The B School is ever more so. They keep
us fairly sequestered in the corner by the Law School. The B School is
a new, 3 story, marble, glass, and stone structure. In terms of the
aesthetic, it's great. Lots of light, tons of space, it's gives off a
very zen vibe. The classrooms are typical 70 person amphitheatre
style. Every seat has the internet jack and the chairs are the big,
plush, swivel type. The entire building has every amenity -from plasma
TVs in the hallways playing CNBC to internet jacks built into the koi
pond in the courtyard. It has it's own cafe with the normal espresso,
sandwiches, sushi, salads, etc. There's very little reason to ever
leave the confines of Marshall. That being said, since USC is in
downtown LA, almost nobody lives near campus. A handful live in the
new loft developments downtown, but most grad students live at the
Beach or in Hollywood. Both are a 20-30 minute commute, but worth it.
There's a huge USC enclave in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa/Redondo Beach
area. Despite USC's location, I always felt very safe. I always joked
that there must be snipers on the rooftops because no unsavory
characters EVER made it onto campus for the two years I was there.
There is something that keeps them outside of the USC perimeter, and
it's not crazy visible security. You don't notice much overt security
there (police swaggering around with guns), but I think there's a good
deal of plain clothes security going on. That's the only thing that
makes sense.
