On campus recruiting is not as promising as it seems. Most top-notch financial
and consulting firms do not recruit at Marshall. Summer internship
opportunities
are around high 100s. There are about low 100s of fulltime job postings for the
final year students, total of 600 full-timers and PMers. Majority of the job
listings are from corporate companies in the consumer retail industry like
Mattel, HP, SBC, few smaller financial I-Banking firms, and some big 4
accounting
firms. Usually an interview consists of 3 rounds, a very comprehensive process.
Full-timers typically get to interview with 2-3 companies, however, PMers
usually
are not among companies' favorite list.
For 2002 according to Marshall's Career Resource Center, of those who received
job offers, 30% of the students were offered fulltime jobs thru on-campus
recruiting, and 70% were offered as result of their own job search efforts.
Job
offers, salary packages, and quality of jobs have declined in the recent years.
Career Resource Center is very helpful in terms of job search preparation and
coaching.
Much emphasis is placed on networking. Students who come in with high
expectation in career outlook, do not bet on getting jobs of first choice. Aim
high but be flexible to settle for 2nd or worse choice until the economy turns
around.
