Hope you like snow! I don't. The last couple of winters have been
some of the worst in upstate New York history. Lucky me. But most
people don't let it get them down. The community is certainly used to
it and the students plan lots of ski trips and different snow-based
activities. It is still warm when the school year starts and the
spring is beautiful. People get so excited when it starts to warm up
that there are tons of street and park festivals and outdoor
activities. Very nice. Unfortunately, the winters tend to be long.
Graduate student housing is very nice, but very limited. If you get on
the wait list you may as well start searching elsewhere. But the good
side is that there is plenty of other housing in Rochester. There is a
whole area of town in the southeast that it very college student-
oriented. Lots of coffee shops and restaurants. Many students choose
to live there. The rent ranges from about $400 to about $800 which
again depending upon where you come from is either cheap or expensive.
Also, there is an accepted student website where many people make
roommate arrangements. But there are several nice neighborhoods in
which to find a place. Although the city is spread out the traffic is
not bad at all so you can usually get from place to place pretty
quickly. There are only a couple of areas you should steer clear of
when apartment hunting and anyone at the school can tell you where they
are.
The school is beautiful. It has a very cozy, ivy league feel. In the
spring when all the flowers are blooming it is quite picturesque. The
business school buildings are probably the newest in the school. They
are very nice. Very distinguished looking and comfortable. We have
our own common area separate from the rest of the school that serves
snacks and has great soups, sandwiches, salads, all-powerful coffee,
etc. We have a wireless network that works anywhere in our buildings
and well as the surrounding area outside which is nice in the summer
and spring.
There is not a lot of crime around the campus. Not many perpetrators
lying in wait when it's 10 degrees outside. Even so, it is a good idea
to be aware of your surroundings as with any place. Our parking area
is pretty far from the main campus so if you are leaving really late at
night you should probably get a walking buddy. Other than that, I
would say no worries.
The business school is a world away from the undergraduate or the other
graduate programs. The buildings are physically separate and we rarely
do anything that involves the undergraduate population or the other
graduate programs. There is a once a year joint MBA/MD party, but that
is the extent of it. However, the business school has many social
events. At least one happy hour per week and the various clubs are
always holding some social event for the students. There are quite a
few party animals here so there is usually a wealth of activities
(Simon-sponsored or otherwise) going on at any given time. We
sometimes invite other business schools (Buffalo, RIT, Cornell,
Syracuse) to our events and they almost always come. They serve as a
great networking opporunity as well as a chance to see someone besides
your classmates.
