Wharton has always been thought of as primarily a Finance school, but it is
definitely gaining steam in many other areas, including marketing,
entrepreneurism, information technology, and others. They put in place a new
Director of Career Management a year or so ago, and he has completely reorganized
the office and made several substantial improvements in service to students as
well as employers. I saw a huge increase in outreach to students in their search
efforts and also a huge increase in job opportunities coming through the office.
The two biggest industries making up the largest number of job opps are still
Investment Banking and Consulting. All of the top companies in those industries
recruit on campus, but we also see lots of major corporations in the technology
industry, media/entertainment, consumer goods, and others. There are still some
career paths such as non-profit which will require the student to do most of the
legwork themselves in the job search process. All of the above goes for both
internships and full-time jobs. Overall, I think the career management office is
getting better in providing the services students need to make their job searches
easier. They have even put together very comprehensive rules for both students
and recruiters which I think will improve the perceptions that employers may have
of Wharton students.
