I've found that they are the single best source because what they tell you is the truth. Everyone who gets in is smart. My advice would be to be honest with yourself. If you have an unbelievable background (that means in addition to scores/GPA, excellent work experience, extra- curriculars, etc.) than having solid essays and recommendations make sense. If you're like the rest of us, than being honest in revealing yourself in your application is critical. I'm convinced that my sharing of personally revealing things on my essays was a tipping point. Bottom line is that most people admitted are either brilliant or very smart and very interesting.
