Yes, the GMAT is important but it is only a (very) small component of
what Wharton looks for. Get a decent score (>650) and focus on the
essays instead. Wharton is looking for leaders, people who have matured
professionally and been innovative in what they do at work. They are
looking for self-motivation since so much of the school is student-run
and they look to people who will be active in building the community
over two years. They are looking for passion... in something... be it
FASB rules, wireless technologies, piano, whatever. Make sure that
comes across. Finally, remember that the people reading the essays are
also students and they are looking for the type of person they would be
willing to spend time with in a learning team. The class makeup is
diverse, and the AdCom does that on purpose. Bring something to the
table and make sure it shines through on the essay and the interview.
