Unfortunately for the University of Chicago - it is located in Chicago
and Hyde Park specifically.
A general sentiment runs thick across campus that many potential
students avoid Chicago because of its midwestern location. The proof is
in there: a large number of the student body have either grown up or
have some connection to the midwest. Thankfully, this appeal to the
student body does not apply to recruiters who come from near and far.
Hyde Park itself leaves much to be desired. Although the "golden
triangle" in which the campus is located is well patrolled, crime is
common, particularly to street-parked cars and bikes (which means most
because parking is scarcity in Hyde Park). There are some large
apartment complexes - e.g. "Regent's Park" houses a large number of GSB
students - which create some conveniences by having a large GSB
community, however, a large number of students migrate north to Chicago
for better housing options.
All eyes are on the new, rising GSB building. For now, the GSB is split
among several different buildings which gives a segmented feeling to the
school. This new building is promising -- Once the GSB is housed in one
building, the student body, academics and recruiting can come together
in some harmony - at least hopefully.
