This is the downside to the GSB: the Hyde Park location is not ideal.
Most students live in Hyde Park their first year and then downtown or
in Lincoln Park the second year. My recommendation would be to live
downtown both years if you like living in a city. While Chicago's
campus is beautiful and fairly safe, the sourrounding areas are not and
campus safety bulletins include robberies and muggings once in a
while. Since most students do not live in school housing, this is not
a huge issue. High rise buildings such as The Doral (downtown Chicago)
and Regents Park (Hyde Park) have large concentrations of GSB students
and so become somewhat dorm-like. Both are good options for students
who want to live in a safe, friendly environment, although neither are
particularly close to campus. Dining facilities on campus are varied:
the b school has it's own (somewhat overpriced) cafe with hotfood,
coffee, and snacks. The divinity school cafe has more variety with
ethnic and organic foods from area restaurants (and much more
reasonably priced).
The bookstore cafe has starbucks coffee and drinks
as well as entrees from area restaurants. The undergrad campus has
several dining options with a la carte pricing. Local restaurants and
chains like subway are also a close walk from campus.
The business school is building a new building which will be ready
september 2004. Tt promises to be a gorgeous facility with state of
the art equipment, wireless-enabled class rooms, and the works. The
school's Gleacher Center is the downtown campus which houses the
executive and part time programs. Full-time students can take classes
at the building as well. It is fairly new with stadium seating and
comfortable chairs in the classrooms as well as many study rooms and a
library for group meetings.
