Prestige with employers: in every field, Chicago GSB is considered to be a top
business school. Many recruiters associate it with finance, so in industries in
which financial knowledge is crucial, GSB is at the very top of the list. Many
recruiters still find GSB students to be lacking in 'social graces' and somewhat
'wooden' and 'quant-jock-esque' but the school is doing a lot to try to alter
this perception, and the fact that so many top firms recruit at the GSB means
that each student as the opportunity to disprove this stereotype himself.
Campus recruiting: the top investment banks, investment management firms, and
consulting companies recruit at the GSB. In addition many midwest-based
conglomerates recruit here, as well as big tech firms like Microsoft and Cisco.
The quantity and caliber of companies recruiting at Chicago should not be an
issue. For people who want to work at smaller firms, however, there are many
more Chicago-based firms for obvious reasons than there are from other
geographic
locations. This should be a consideration for those who want to work in
California or on the East Coast. While it is not impossible to find these
opportunities, it takes more effort in terms of networking and cold calling.
Career placement resources: the career services center offers assistance on all
levels. From typical questions for interviews to resume reviews to seminars on
how to network, career services is really helpful. To start, the online
resources are great: industry-specific information, on-campus recruiting,
calendars of presentations, and other resources. The career services library is
full of company specific information, brochures, magazines, books, and any
resources you would need to find contacts and prepare for interviews. The
career
services professionals give one on one help from resume reviews to career
coaching (for those who are not sure what type of job they are looking for) to
help with off-campus strategies.
The school's facebook is very helpful - it is easy to search the alumni database
by industry, undergrad university, and other interests. Alumni are very
generous
with their time and have all been willing, in my experience, to do informational
interviews.
