The essays for UC Berkeley's Haas School are extensive by design - given
the small size of the school, they want to filter out at every possible
step. Selectivity is therefore high because the "ROI" for the excellent
and yet affordable (publicly subsidized!) school clearly surpasses its
peers. The interview was optional when I attended and was conducted by a
current student on campus, which gave a great flavor of what life was
like there. I was waitlisted and played an interesting game of being
a "just squeaky enough" wheel e.g. making my desire to accept an offer
of admission should it go through while not being too annoying to the
admissions staff!
