Well, it's New Orleans. Partying and drinking are huge here, not just
for college students but for everyone. You can buy hard liquor in the
drugstore--it's next to the candy bars at the checkout counter.
The French Quarter is popular, of course, as are some bars and
restaurants closer to campus: Fat Harry's, The Boot (primarily for
undergrads), The Bulldog, Dos Jefes, everything along Magazine St.
The restaurant scene here is second only to New York and maybe LA or
Chicago, but it can be expensive. Still, everyone should splurge once
on lunch or dinner at Commander's Palace.
The social chairs for the MBA classes are good at holding frequent
events, and the bashes for Halloween are legendary. My one complaint is
that virtually all the events are centered on drinking or going to
bars, while there are so many other things to do in and around the
city: the top-notch zoo and nature institute, sports teams, the
plantations along the River Road.
