Housing is reasonably priced, at least for someone coming from the
northeast. Tulane is located in the center of the beautiful and
historic uptown area of New Orleans, and while there are very few
apartment complexes near campus, there are plenty of apartments in
houses nearby.
Crime and safety are definitely a concern as the murder rate in New
Orleans continues to rise. Despite its beauty, the area around the
university can be dangerous, and students are advised to travel in
groups at night, take campus shuttles or cabs, etc. When choosing a
neighborhood to live in, make sure you talk to locals about not just
the neighborhood but the block in question--one block can be fine, and
the next one dangerous. Visit the apartment you're thinking of renting
at night before you commit to a lease.
The campus is not particularly attractive--Loyola, which is next door,
has far better architecture--but the uptown location makes up for it.
Freeman just opened its new building, which is gorgeous: The latest in
electronics and computers, spacious breakout and conference rooms, and
the crown jewel: a mock trading floor. The majority of the MBA classes
will be held here, while the "old" building is used for the undergrads.
Tulane is in the process of building a new university center, so
overall university facilities will leave something to be desired for
the next year or three. Dining is average for a college campus.
