Quality of Life Survey |
| Full-time MBA program |
People coming from large urban centers like L.A. or NY will find New
Orleans a breath of fresh air. The cost of living is reasonable for a
city of its size and you can live close to campus in single or shared
accommodations for a reasonable price. Tulane is surrounded by
historical residental neighborhoods and there are plenty of rooms and
ground-floor apartments for rent. Upon accepting admission to the MBA
program, plan a trip in either July or early August (if possible) to
scout the "For Rent" signs and get your pick of the best apartments.
Landlords prefer graduate students...particularly the MBA and Law School
students, so you will be a preferred customer. If you have a car, you
can also find newer apartment complexes in the neighboring city of
Metairie if that is more your style. I recommend living closer to the
school to make it easier to participate in social events.
Crime is not the issue that it is made out to be in the media. New
Orleans has pockets of violent crime around the old housing projects in
certain parts of the city. Stay out of the Projects, and you will be
safe. The city feels like a small town at times with its quaint houses
and relatively laid back lifestyle. However, you always have to remind
yourself that New Orleans is a major commercial center with the pick
pockets and muggers that come with the territory. I walked or rode my
bike to and from the campus for two years without incident. Overall, I
rate New Orleans a great place to be a student on a budget.
