Superb. Living in Palo Alto and surrounds was like a resort for most of
us east coasters. The Stanford campus is the most beautiful in the
country. Back then it didn't accommodate on-campus living for students,
so we all lived in the surrounding villages. That was fine, but it
reduced the sense of community in the school. Some of us lived in the
hills second year, renting cottages with swimming pools and grand views,
and that was truly extraordinary (though a distraction from studies).
Most of the classrooms opened onto outdoor courtyards, which were
convivial gathering places during the day.
