Stanford was at the top of its game back in the early 80s. It had eclipsed
Harvard in national reputation, and the elite recruiters showed up in force. The
vast majority of grads went into investment banking, management consulting and
tech. Because the school is relatively small (300 per class then) and because of
those industries' dominance, other recruiters were discouraged about coming to
campus. The career placement office tried to generate diversity, but they ended
up mostly directing traffic for the 15 recruiters with all the clout.
