Employment Prospects Survey |
| Full-time MBA program |
SFSU, despite having been in existance for over 100
years, has an image problem, and not with just the business school. As an
undergrad in a technical major looking for work in the mid-90's, Silicon Valley
employers would say to me "SF State what?????". Despite having granted degrees
in
my field for 30+ years, the department had no local reputation to speak of.
In regard to the business school, there are very few, if any, recruiting
possibilities for MBA graduates. Internships are equally rare, if they exist at
all. Each graduate of the program is on his/her own and there is no alumni
network to speak of.
Employers in the area largely hire MBA grads from Berkeley and Stanford for high
paying new MBA positions in consulting, industry, etc. The strong alumni
networks
of these schools are also a plus in finding a job.
Probably over 50% of SFSU MBA graduates go back to their home country, hence,
the reputation of the department is offshore. American graduates of the program
usually work while they are in the program and use the MBA to advance their
existing career (The degree provides excellent background for this purpose!),
hence many do not need an internship or need to be recruited. For those who did
need help in finding work (such as myself), the school offers virtually no
support whatsoever for graduate students, although recruiters do come to the
school for undergraduate business majors.
Jobs that graduates eventually fall into are commonly with "less prestigeous"
companies and commonly at lower pay than their counterparts from "name" schools.
