Quality of Life Survey |
| Full-time MBA program |
Quality of life here is great. Evanston is more like a college
community than a booming city which has positives and negatives.
Students really bond with each other since we all live in such close
proximity and you get a real communal feel. There are graduate student
dorms, the largest being McManus which hosts all Kellogg students. It
is largely international students who don??t want to deal with buying
furniture, hooking up cable, etc. McManus is also the place for large
gatherings, meetings, Superbowl parties etc. It is fully equipped with
study rooms, study lounges, pool table, and ping pong. Other students
live in downtown Evanston which is a great area full of restaurants,
coffee shops, bars, and bookstores. Still others make the commute from
downtown but as a 1st year, that is difficult given that time
management in the student universe is a little hard to get used to at
first.
Most Kellogg classes for full-timers are held in one building
(the Jacobs center) which is fully equipped with modern classroom,
wireless internet, study rooms, and lounges. Our Atrium (the
cafeteria, meeting place) is a little small and there is competition to
get the 'wall seats' and a place to 'plug-in.' The building is a
little bit confusing to find your way around but once you get used to
it, it's just fine. I don't think it is as nice of a building as other
peer schools but the general atmosphere of Kellogg really makes up for
it. The cafeteria gets packed in between classes and the food leaves a
little bit to be desired. However, there are plenty of restaurants
within 5 minutes if you can hold out until you have a larger block of
time.
Neighborhood-wise, Evanston is a well-to-do area so the shops/
restaurant/ town really cater to that. For the most part, streets are
well lit and the area is very safe although there have been incidents
of mugging near the El (Foster Street El is supposedly the most
dangerous). You can call student escorts to drive you home if you feel
unsafe but generally everything feels pretty safe even at night.
Chicago Ave (the main drag) is always busy with people and well-lit so
as long as you stay on larger streets, transportation by foot is
generally fine.
