Admission & Application Survey |
| Full-time MBA program |
The admissions process for HBS is similar to other similarly ranked
schools: essays, grades, GMAT, recommendations, and the reputations of
your prior schools and employers count - as well as an interview if they
request it. What's different: First, the essays are extremely short, 400-
600 words. This seems easier until you realize how hard it is to get
everything you want in there. Second, they really mean it when they say
that they're looking for leadership qualities. This is by far the most
important area in which to stand out: show them that you think like a
leader. Third, HBS is a huge school with a huge applicant pool - have
pity on the person reading your essays. Assume that everyone applying is
smart, talented, driven, went to a good college, and worked for a
successful company - you have to quickly and clearly show them how and
why you're special. They don't want everyone to be the same - do some of
the thinking for them and illustrate in your essays what it is that you
in particular will bring to the class - age, experience, outlook,
whatever.
