Admission & Application Survey
Full-time MBA program The admissions process is in the process of being reworked, so people entering for the class of 2007 (starting fall 2005) may have a different experience. I was living abroad when I applied. I knew I was going to apply to b- schools, so I visited schools before I left the US. Some schools didn't want me to interview or even visit if I wouldn't be applying for more than a year. GA Tech wasn't like that. The students working in the graduate office were helpful and returned phone calls and emails. I requested to sit in on a finance class, they told me what days and times it was offered, and I got to see a finacne class when I went. I interviewed over the phone. Since I lived in Japan at the time, the admissions office employees were very accomodating to finding a time that wasn't too early for them or too late for me. The key trait sought is how a prospective student would fit in with the rest of hte student body. The class is small, about 100 per year, so there is a famiy feeling here. Everyone knows everyone else. Prospectives need to demonstrate enthusiasm and leadership. This isn't lip service. Because the number of students in each class is small, a majority of the students take on running clubs, volunteer groups, etc. People who want to sit back and not take initiative should not apply. There are only two required essays. Many people worry about the second essay, one that rarely changes: "If you could have a dinner party and invite 3 peopel, living or dead, who would they be and why?" People who force an answer by listing famous business people don't get extra points. Honestly answer. Anything from sprots stars to one's ancestors is acceptable. It is the "WHY" in the question that is important. One should apply by the second deadline, usually in January to get the Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA). With this, tuition is waived in exchange for 14 hours of work per week at the school. About 30 students per class get it, often based on GMAT and prior leadership experience. This is a great opportunity for out-of-state students to go to school rather cheaply at an excellent program.
