The Business School had weekly happy hours where everyone could unwind
plus cultural outings, receptions with guest speakers, professors
joined us - it was great! Emory University also provided plenty of
opportunities to join events with the greater university community.
Atlanta nightlife is notorious and you had access to as much as you
could handle. One thing that was unique for the time that I was there
was the existence of a lively on-line community within the graduate
business school. We were a beta test site for First Class which
contained many of the features of current online communities but it was
new in 1993. We could e-mail one another, share files, work on files
online, instant message, post messages in a "chat" area, etc. It
knitted us together as a group in a way that we had never experienced
before. And in addition to providing a great information
sharing/homework doing/project organizing tool, we used it extensively
to organize social events for the whole community and for our own
groups of friends.
