Every Friday at 6pm is the start of "Fuqua Friday," which provides free
food, beer, and wine to all Fuqua students, faculty, and their
families. It's great to see everyone outside of the classroom, and to
meet people's wives, husbands, and kids.
Durham has fantastic restaurants and there's more to do in town than
most people think. Durham is definitely a driving town - if you come
to Fuqua, you will have to have a car.
Durham isn't a big town, so there are a few select hot spots that
students tend to visit over and over (George's Garage, Satisfactions),
but it's the company that matters, not the venue, right? Chapel Hill,
only 10 miles away, also has lots of bars and restaurants that Fuqua
students frequent (East End and West End bars, Lucy's, Thirsty
Turtle). The school sets up "networking events" with students at other
Duke grad schools and with the University of North Carolina's Kenan
Flagler School of Business. Those events are what you make of them. I
mean, you could treat them as part of the dating scene, if you want.
But in my experience, if you go to these events, the people are as
segregated as the boys and girls at the seventh grade dance.
There are tons of clubs to join at Fuqua. And if there is a club that
doesn't exist, you can always start one and get funding from the school.
