The biggest social event at Columbia is the free happy hours every
Thursday. It is held on campus, in the business school, and provides a
great way to destress for the week and catch up with friends and
professors. Afterwards, there is a designated "post-happy hour" bar
that students then journey to in order to continue the celebration.
Being in New York City, there is an infinite amount of social options
in terms of bars, restaurants, and clubs. Only a short subway ride
away are some of the best restaurants in the world! However, students
tend to live around ampus on the Upper West Side and tend to hang out
in the same area. Occassionally there will be outings downtown, but
they don't get as good of a showing.
Because many students come from the New York area, they have "outside"
social circles in the vicinity. Therefore, the study body is not an
isolated community as it might be at some other schools. As mentioned
before, at school, the vast majority of your friends come from your
cluster. After the first few weeks at school when many orientation
events are held, it becomes much more difficult to meet people outside
of your cluster. The best way is to join clubs, both professional and
social interest, to help expose yourself to other people in the
school.
As the average age for entering students, there is a large population
of married people. Yet spouses and significant others are welcome to
almost all events held by the school. However, the dating scene for
singles is very much thriving. There is no shortage of dating venues
at the school and most singles are open to dating other students.
