Housing is difficult at Columbia. New York real estate prices are
astronomical and finding an apartment that is affordable requires luck
and hard work. Many single students look for roommates to help cut
down on expenses. University housing is basically limited to those
people who are international or some lucky couples that get their
application in on time.
Campus is integrated into New York City. Unlike other top schools,
Columbia is in the middle of the largest business hub in the world.
This provides for unique opportunities on the professional and social
front. Yet, Columbia is also isolated enough that you feel as though
you are on an academic campus, not in the middle of the city. The
faclities have been greatly improved over the past few years.
Renovated classesrooms are the norm with network connectivity and multi
media capabilities.
Safety is a concern as it is on any campus or in any city. The
neighborhood is mainly a reflection of the academic nature of the
university and is very safe. Wandering too far away from campus in a
couple directions can put you in a more dangerous neighborhood.
The business school is very attuned to stundents needs and has done a
good job crafting the schedule and cirriculum to avoid burn-out as much
as possible. There are no classes on Friday, except for the first
semester for 4 weeks. This provides great opportunty to work on career
developement or get away for the weekend.
The faculty is willing to work with students extensively to resolve any
personal issues or troubles that arise.
