I commute to campus from outside Williamsburg, and there are a good
handful of us that do it, and it's manageable. It just depends on what
your priorities are, and mine were to stay where I'd been before school
started. When I'm on campus, parking is a little difficult, but again,
manageable. I love the Rec Center - the gym facilities are pretty nice,
and they have lots of cardio and weight machines. The campus is gorgeous
and well-maintained (although there's still some residual scars from
Hurricane Isabel which struck the area REALLY hard this year.) Blow Hall,
where our classes are held, is a small space - there's not a lot of study
space, but my personal view of it is to get out of there as much as
possible. I already spend so much of my time there that I would rather go
sit at the on-campus coffee shop or the bookstore and use their wireless
internet connections instead. (And practically every incoming student has
gone wireless, which I highly recommend - it's very convenient.) The
crime on campus is the one surprising aspect of school; I expected
Williamsburg to be a lot quieter than other campuses in Central Virginia.
However, about once a month (so far, and I've only been here for a few
months, so that frequency may just be coincidence) there's been what I
would consider a major assault on a female, and supposedly last year
there were quite a few instances of people being "jumped" on campus and
robbed. (This year one of my classmates' laptops was stolen.) That being
said, I don't feel unsafe on campus, but I don't walk alone after dark if
I can avoid it. As long as you stick to the usual rules: use the
buddy-system, know where you are and who you're with, keep your head up,
be aware, etc... then I think you should be fine.
