BU's career service center took recruiting seriously because it also catered to
undergraduates; it had full on-line searching and scheduling capabilities.
However, many of the MBA full-time students knew that some recruiters that came
to Harvard and MIT overlooked BU (many consulting companies and technology
companies, for instance), or were interested only in undergraduates. The
perception that BU is considered a weak substitute for Harvard and MIT seems to
be changing. A recent Wall Street Journal issue ranked BU in the top 50 business
schools on the basis of feedback from recruiters, though well back from the top.
The high brand value of Harvard and MIT is certainly an issue that will not
disappear overnight, despite BU's rise in reputation. In Boston and Cambridge,
the business view is myopic especially in the high-tech and biotech sectors:
applicants from other than "top" schools won't be considered unless they have a
background in scientific research from a school such as Harvard, MIT, Stanford,
Berkeley, Caltech or one of the Ivies. These companies have branding issues of
their own, and they don't want any dilution with MBAs from non-top-tier schools.
